Work Tablets
Year: 2024
Project
The tablet has a variety of applications in the modern world, making it one of the most commonly used mobile devices. Its most popular application is in the form of a reader or Internet access device. This makes it a preferred replacement for the personal computer and laptop. Compact, convenient and easy to use, the tablet manages to satisfy even the most demanding needs – of course after a mobile phone. It combines complex features – reading, taking photos and videos, talking, surfing the Internet and more. Several types of standardized sizes and formats make it frequently preferred – not only in everyday life, but also in the workplace. The goal of this project is to build several variants of profiled tablets, oriented towards work devices, without taking away all other needs for their use. The priority is aimed at the field of work tablets, regardless of the type of environment in which they will be used – offices, industrial premises, workshops, studios, construction sites, etc.

Development
The development is aimed at a working tablet for designing 3D models and drawings; creating vector images; creating tables, diagrams and infographics; selecting and monitoring information flows, data and statistical models, etc. It can also be adapted to control automated machines and various types of electromechanical devices, through appropriate software, using the basic functions of the tablet. There are no limits to its applicability in various professional fields and industries.
The tablet design will be developed into a product line of five main variants. Accompanying products will also be developed for it – a stylus, additional accessories for carrying and storage, as well as a stand for positioning on a table. The basic dimensions of all five tablet variants are respectively: length 385 mm, width 275 mm and thickness 15 mm. When holding the panel loosely while using the tablet, peripheral areas are provided in all five variants, in which there is no contact with the touchscreen when holding it. The emphasis falls on three main functional zones, with the help of which the tablet is used – frontal zone, right and left side zones. A 16-inch touchscreen is located in the front area, which allows for more than enough usable working zone. In the development process, a variant with the adaptation of tempered glass can also be tested, but this will be part of a stage with prototype tests that will show whether it is a suitable advantage, technologically justified, as well as the cost of a type of part when assembling the tablet. Immediately below the touchscreen are positioned buttons with basic functions, intended for the overall control of the tablet; the buttons are marked with pictograms, the symbolism of which suggests their function – they are adapted with a reverse relief in each button. In the right area there are two sectors in which important functions have been adapted – in the upper sector there are buttons for “on/off” the tablet, and in the lower sector there is a small panel with holes for outputting sound. In the left area there are also two very important sectors fixed, which are of key importance for placing external peripheral devices and memory. In an adapted niche, in the upper sector there is a separate panel, part of the main one, with three types of built-in USB inputs (ports) – USB 3.0 Micro-B, USB Micro-B Super Speed and two USB Micro-C Super Speed, with the second input intended for charging the battery; in the lower sector there is a small panel with a memory card input.
When the development of the tablet reaches the phase of demonstrating its functions, in order to approach the characteristics of a real working product, a set of hardware components will be adapted, the purpose of which is to recreate the overall functioning of the tablet. For this purpose, a suitable touchscreen and a hardware module with an installed operating system will be adapted to the structure of the panel. Three of the main priorities are: a large working zone, implemented through the adapted 16-inch touch screen to the main structure of the five tablet variants; a quality battery with a sufficiently high capacity and operating cycle over time; a durable structure and strength of the panel, ensured during the designing of the tablet, as well as the selection of a type of plastic with suitable characteristics for the purpose, for the production of the panel. Of course, the listed advantages must be combined in a balanced way, without this being at the expense of the total weight and negatively affecting the assembly of the components, details and parts that make up the tablet. In the process of product development, in order to prepare for implementation in a possible future small-scale production, an individual hardware module will be developed, consistent with the innovations in the working tablet, after the tests of the experimental sample have been carried out – aiming at completing a pre-production prototype. Various ergonomic features will be taken into account in the tablet panel, especially in the choice of materials used for its production – technology for injection molding of plastic components and parts. The selected color shades and combinations, effects, textures and types of reliefs, leading to psychological perceptions and physiological sensations when touching the surface of the panel. The next stages of development will cover possible refinements, in the form of possible redesign and reengineering in Stage 2: “3D Modeling”, after which we will gradually move on to making mock-ups, test products and prototypes in Stage 3: “Models and Prototypes”, before moving on to the final stage – Stage 4: “Adaptation of Manufacturing”.
