Men’s Jacket

Year: 2004

Project

The jacket as a product adds individuality and emphasizes the physical proportions of the person who wears it; therefore, when choosing this type of garment, there must be certain criteria – visual harmony between the person and the jacket, functionality, ergonomics, purpose according to the season and possible accessories to it. Fashion preferences for jackets, among men and women, are in a wide style range, which often leads to the offering of a huge assortment of models on the market. This is a product that should have a prominent functional structure and quality of performance, adding to this comfort, style and purposeful design, which automatically adds significant value to it. In this case, the project was aimed at a men’s faux leather jacket, with an emphasis on sports style; intended as clothing for daily use, for two seasons – spring and fall; with the possibility of combining with sweatshirts and some types of blouses.

Final Variant of a Men’s Artificial Leather Jacket – Final Product

Development

The approach to the development of the jacket was flexible, as usual, due to the specificity of the main material from which it was made. This universal factor is always decisive – what will be the main material and the production technology for the manufacture of the product. Due to the fact that large pieces of textile were not used, even when designing the structure of the design and then constructing the cut, what preparation is required was taken into account. This required the blanks to be built, based on “strip” type elements, which had to be joined in advance, and only then to make the cut, taking into account the direction and arrangement of the elements, in the overall styling of the jacket. The composition of the material was a two-layer structure, made up of: a front part with artificial leather, and on the back – a second layer of fabric. Both in the front and back areas, as well as in the two sides of the jacket – made up of the sleeves – an emphasis was placed on synchronicity in the composition of the styling, consisting of elements in two colors – black and oil green. The color range was also considered in the complementary details in the jacket, which are made of textile fabric type “knitting” on a cotton base – in the upper area of the jacket, at the ends of the sleeves, at the beginning of the entry area of the outer pockets and in the lower area of the periphery of the jacket – on the left and right. The zipper was also selected from several dozen options for one that would match the overall design. The type of seams and the way of dividing the individual zones in the jacket were also given detailed attention in order to create a successful finish to the product. In the inner zone of the jacket, a lining was adapted, constructed and tailored to the overall structure and specificity of the jacket. Internal pockets were also adapted – one on the left, at chest level, with several compartments, and two lower ones, around the area of the external pockets. These types of details were a key emphasis of the overall approach to building the design, because they gave completeness to the product, and were not actions in themselves. The jacket was used intensively for 6 years, even in some colder months of the year – in combination with thicker sweatshirts, blouses and thin sweaters. Personally, as a designer and developer, I wore and used the jacket to get a clear idea of what kind of product I had achieved, which required adaptation according to the size I wear and my overall torso and arm proportions. Even after the intensive use of the jacket over the years, its general structure remained in decent shape, before being used mainly for work needs and finally recycled. With the specific person with whom we built the product, we created this pre-production prototype, which was 100% identical to the expected final product. Several more test versions of a possible product line were made. There were prerequisites for implementation in the form of small-scale production, or at least a limited number of products, but for various reasons it was decided not to develop further.
