Spatial Sculptures for Urban Environment

Year: 2005 – 2007

Project

The aesthetic design of the urban environment is an important element for the people living in it, in the form of a game with their imagination, spatial sensations and stylistic perceptions. The environment in a city should evoke adequate sensations and harmony – with its architecture, pedestrian areas, squares, parks, etc. The so-called fight against “visual noise” often requires a clear and focused approach – building architectural solutions; stylistically adequate facades and common spaces in / in front of the buildings; abstract structures, with the corresponding messages for the viewer; thematic sculptures, etc. This project covers conceptual solutions for spatial structures in urban environments – for park spaces.

Development

Development is aimed at two visual solutions – type “structural skeleton” and type “streamlined shape”. The conceptual solution with the “structural skeleton” is at a more advanced stage of development in the form of a scale model. It is made of metal lamella elements connected by soldering. Volume abstract forms are built into specific areas of the skeleton, serving as a connection in space – between the individual structural sectors. The concept of this spatial solution is the interpretation of an animal structure – a predator, in an aggressive position of the body. The potential continuation of this project is to scale on a larger scale and to be made technologically from appropriate materials. Metal parts can be replaced again by such, but with larger dimensions. Composite materials, steel sheet material or durable plastic can be used to make the volumetric details. The concept with the “streamlined shape” is at the level of a conceptual solution – product sketches – which needs to be improved structurally and technologically, and then to materialize in a scale model.

Development of four more conceptual variants for spatial structures, also intended for urban environments, has been launched. Thematic sculptures that include: a transforming structure, a bird, a tree and a streamlined shape. Scale models have been made for three of them, and the fourth variant is in the form of product sketches. “Transforming structure” is built of stereometric shapes made of wood with connecting elements made of metal rods, finished with a varnish coating; the supporting parts of the entire structure are made of metal pipes, and the stand is made of MDF. The overall structure of the “Bird” is made mainly of foamed PVC, finished with spray putty and paint; the relief details in the two side zones are made of wood and finished with a varnish coating; the base of the scale model is made of wood. The main material used to make the “Tree” model is from pipes with a copper structure, and the additional details are made from yarn, cut and shaped like “soft balls”; The foundation is wooden, and at its base a color composition is built – finished with a varnish coating. The concept with the “streamlined form” is at the level of an idea solution – product sketches – which needs to be improved structurally, and then materialized in a scaled-down model – a scale model.
